One of the most tedious things about being in a band (and there are many) is attempting to persuade people to part with money in return for being entertained by you. The sheer audacity of it all beggars belief, doesn't it. The times I've urged you all to come and watch The Free French play at Water Rats, or wherever (but usually Water Rats) and then adding as an afterthought "and it'll cost you £6 for the privilege, alright, thanks, cheers." Now I'm sitting here looking at a gigantic pile of unsold Free French CDs and thinking, right, what I should do is give them all away. But even the logistics of that are pretty annoying.

So I hastily compiled a 10-track album, imaginatively titled, I dunno, The Greatest Hits Of The Free French or something. Featuring tunes from right across the career of this pop colossus, from the cheery optimism of "Do You Come Here Often", to the bleak misery of all the rest of them, it's yours for the price of no pounds, no pence.

Download Here. 40.4Mb.

1. Do You Come Here Often? (2001)
2. Living Together (2004)
3. Talking Nepalese (2002)
4. Fireman (2003)
5. The Two Of Us Are Unanimous (2001)
6. How Vicious We Are (2002)
7. Holiday At Home (2005)
8. Cotton Buds (2001)
9. Swigging Echinacea (2002)
10. Trial Separations (2001)

EDIT: My girlfriend has just emailed me saying: "You didn't include 'Metaphorically' in your top 10 FF list. It's like leaving 'You Get What You Give' off a New Radicals greatest hits. You idiot." So here it is.

Gosh, you're a good chap for doing this. I shall endeavour to enjoy this musical fiesta on the way home.
Rhodri Marsdenrhodri on April 28th, 2006 10:34 am (UTC)
Oh, it's nice to receive thanks, but I'm only doing it to show off, really.
Ewanhoshuteki on April 28th, 2006 10:35 am (UTC)
I'd happily buy some Free French albums from you (assuming they won't be retailing for £12.99 or some such), but I suppose it is the logistics in the end. Even if you give them away, someone still has to pay for packaging and delivery.
Rhodri Marsdenrhodri on April 28th, 2006 10:40 am (UTC)
Blimey. Well, as I'm feeling generous, I could sell you all 3 albums for a tenner. No p&p charge. Offer open to all. Simply Paypal colossal amounts of your money to hello at timewasting dot net.

Are you pubbing sometime soon, Rhodri?
Rhodri Marsdenrhodri on April 28th, 2006 10:42 am (UTC)
I think pubbing is pretty much all I do. We just haven't co-incided with choice of pub, have we. We should, though, shouldn't we. I've not seen wardytron in ages, either, which is a crying shame, because I haven't written an amusing journal entry in months and I could do with stealing some of his jokes.

This is very, very true. I've been spamming everywhere with gig dates. It makes me cringe so much to do it, but someone has to, don't they?

I'm always so relieved when anyone turns up for any of our stuff that I usually try to find a way to let them in for free.
I'm rubbish at this malarkey.

I have them all, as well you know, Rhodri. And, as if to spite you, I have just put on It's Not Me, It's You.

Your songs have too many bloody chords.

I'm sorry, but the selection of these tracks was insufficiently interactive to have any meaning for me.

Seriously, thanks, but I'm going to wreck your revisionism by adding in tracks you've missed out.
Derek Parfit's Repugnant Conclusionjudge_death on April 28th, 2006 10:48 am (UTC)
Thanks! I've been listening to Fireman and I Need A Career a lot on my mp3 player recently. Great walking music.
Rhodri Marsdenrhodri on April 28th, 2006 10:56 am (UTC)
As music scholars will know, the Italian instruction Andante at the top of a piece of music means "at a walking pace". Both of the above tunes are a bit blimmin' brisk for Andante. You'd get out of breath pretty quick. They're more like Allegretto.

You numpty!
I just got a wodge of backpay and was going to get the FF CDs.
Now I don't have to!

(If I like what's in that download though, I probably will get the CDs. I like the physical entity)
Rhodri Marsdenrhodri on April 28th, 2006 10:57 am (UTC)
Ah, but if you buy all three albums, you get 24 extra songs. Now you're beginning to see that my supposed giveaway is just a cynical marketing exercise.

What I'd have done is: rather than putting the free mp3s up on Livejournal, which is quite a nice, friendly thing to do, I'd have put them up on my website, spent five minutes thinking up a crap pun title and then told everyone it was an exclusive, internet-only, best-of compilation. That way it looks like I've actually done something when I've just stuck some old material up on the web. If I was feeling really cheeky, I'd have stuck a PayPal donate button next to it.

But, BUT, no "Ghostwriter"? That's like a Bogshed Best of with no "Fat Lad Exam Failure"!

Ah, well, I know what you mean, but you can already download that for free off the Free French website.

This is all too true. Argh, the boxes of CDs, the gig plugs (I'm playing the Primrose in Leeds this Sunday, Central Station in King's Cross a week today). I have bought Free French albums at proper price though so I can feel...moral or something.

Where can you get FF albums from now? I have some songs as mp3 but it looks like they aren't on Amazon now. Sigh sigh.
Rhodri Marsdenrhodri on April 28th, 2006 01:11 pm (UTC)
They are on Amazon - but as above, if you Paypal me a tenner to hello at timewasting dot net, I'll send you all 3. Time limited offer.

thanks Rhodri! I picked up the last one, but getting records can get kind of costly when shipping to the states. I wished I could have gotten them on iTunes or something. I was just looking into the cost of putting a release on it (through tunecore.com) and it was only going to cost about $10. I suppose then I wouldn't have gotten that fantastic Spearmint EP.
Nnicholas_g on April 28th, 2006 10:50 pm (UTC)
Nice - I'll be sure to chuck these on down the old earpipe when I have a spare moment.

I just wonder, what's the name of the albums the songs come from? Could you add them along on that track list above since you have already added the year date.

My package arrived yesterday which was a joy for me but stressful for the postman: we tend to get post when he feels like it but a hefty jiffy bag seems to have spurred him into timely action.

What's with all these half-bars dotted around the songs though?
