this was a thrilling evening
I dug out the cassette of Peel interviewing me on local radio as a dull, uninteresting 17 year old boy about my "Glottal Stop" fanzine. I'd spoken to him fairly regularly on the phone as I used to call the "Mayophone" that was on his desk while he presented his Radio 1 show, to advise him of bands that he liked that were splitting up left, right and centre. But neverthless I was quaking. It was excruciating.

This is edited heavily to spare me even more blushes than I'm currently experiencing, ha.

"Phone up at any time you like."

Thanks, John.

Awww! It's lovely :) :) :)

Haha, that's brilliant.

You said "A Levels" with such glee as well.
Rhodri Marsden[info]rhodri on October 26th, 2004 11:28 am (UTC)
I was being sarcastic, but of course it didn't come across. Nothing did :(
Janet: southpark[info]j4 on October 26th, 2004 11:30 am (UTC)
Hey, I can hear you pronouncing the quotation marks around "A-levels".
It's up for grabs now![info]funnynamehere on October 26th, 2004 11:30 am (UTC)
Oh I've heard worse interviews. Not many mind but then, not many 17 year olds from Dunstable have the bollocks to go on radio.
Rhodri Marsden[info]rhodri on October 26th, 2004 11:33 am (UTC)
Yes, and look where I am today!

Oh.
It's up for grabs now![info]funnynamehere on October 26th, 2004 11:35 am (UTC)
You're Dunstable's most famous son Rhodri.
Rhodri Marsden[info]rhodri on October 26th, 2004 11:36 am (UTC)
I'm sure there must be someone else.

Faye Tozer from Steps. There you go. Although she's not a bloke, of course.
It's up for grabs now![info]funnynamehere on October 26th, 2004 11:39 am (UTC)
Well there you go. Marry her and you can be Dunstable's most famous couple, the Posh'n'Becks of Dunstable but with more musical talent. And you can live off Faye's no doubt enormous earnings from Steps.
Simon Diamond[info]thewordsihate on October 26th, 2004 11:43 am (UTC)
Hey! I was born in Dunstable you cheeky bastard.
Rhodri Marsden[info]rhodri on October 26th, 2004 11:45 am (UTC)
Goodness me. I was born in St Albans but my parents got me over the heavily fortified Herts / Beds border pretty sharpish.
It's up for grabs now![info]funnynamehere on October 26th, 2004 11:48 am (UTC)
You were?

Well..er..you can be Dunstable's second most famous son, because Rhodri's been on more John Peel shows than you.
Simon Diamond[info]thewordsihate on October 26th, 2004 11:54 am (UTC)
I was on the radio once telling a joke. I was 6 and I think the joke was offensive to the Irish.
Alfred Armstrong[info]alfaguru on October 26th, 2004 11:40 am (UTC)
Your more recent radio career is all here, isn't it? Your signature "indeed" and all.
Rhodri Marsden[info]rhodri on October 26th, 2004 11:43 am (UTC)
The "indeed" is intact, but everything else has thankfully made way for a far louder and far more bitter individual.
Alfred Armstrong[info]alfaguru on October 26th, 2004 11:49 am (UTC)
It's true you didn't heckle John Peel in the same way you do Tim. Imagine if you'd suddenly announced that you didn't think this was going anywhere and that he should play a record.

Aw, that was great! I love the way you obey his request to 'just talk for a minute' by shutting up completely. Was that a rabbit-in-headlights moment, perchance?
Rhodri Marsden[info]rhodri on October 26th, 2004 11:54 am (UTC)
Floodlights.

Do your parents still live at that address?
Rhodri Marsden[info]rhodri on October 26th, 2004 12:36 pm (UTC)
No... Why? would you like to get to know them a bit better?
Reggie Chamberlain-King[info]reggie_c_king on October 26th, 2004 12:45 pm (UTC)
I would happily send them the occassional postcard.

That was great. And it makes me want to read that first issue of Glottal Stop.

You don't want to. Far too many exclamation marks.

Aw, thanks for that Rhodri. It has fair warmed my cockles.

Great stuff.
Made me smile and well up at the same time.
Like all Peel related things today.

If I may say so, Rhodri, I think you share something important with Peel: the very English pursuit of winning by losing. It's there in Peel's anecdotes about how useless he was at glamourous, star-studded events ('star-studded event' usually meaning a nightclub visit with Mike Read where they spot Bryan Ferry and Peel ends up, by accident, in the kitchen) just as it's there in your photo which says, winningly, 'I give up'.

Anyway, here's my obituary, filled with love and hate in equal measure.

Please can everybody send their John Peel tributes (feel free to copy and paste from your livejournals) to luke.turner@playlouder.com, as we are compiling a feature of memories in his honour to go on playlouder.com

This means you Rhodders xxx

I am really touched by such a warm tribute to the great man.

He really was adorable.
